George Frideric Handel’s organ concerto in B flat major, HWV 294, Op. 4 No. 6, may be one of the lesser-known works from his extensive body of work to the general public, but it clearly demonstrates his exceptional sense of melody, harmony and dramatic structure.
As in many of his compositions, Handel manages to strike a perfect balance between elegance and expressive power. The work reflects the rich Baroque style in which graceful melodies are combined with a solid harmonic foundation. The music demonstrates Handel’s talent for seamlessly linking both lyrical and energetic passages. Characteristic features include its clear structure and lively rhythm, which ensure the work remains appealing to both performers and listeners.
Although it appears less frequently on concert programmes than his most famous compositions, it deserves a permanent place within the Baroque repertoire. The inventive instrumentation and refined musical dialogues make it a captivating piece to listen to. For musicians, the work offers numerous opportunities to bring out the stylistic characteristics of the late Baroque. It is a composition that once again underlines Handel’s versatility as a composer.
Anecdote
This sixth movement from the collection of six organ concertos, Opus 4, was published in 1738. It was a reworking of his harp concerto in B flat, which had also become popular and had been premiered on 19 February 1736 at Covent Garden Theatre in London. Unlike many composers, Handel did not write his organ concertos exclusively for the concert hall. He often played them himself between the acts of his oratorios to keep the audience engaged whilst the scenery was being changed or the singers were resting. His improvisations were so popular that some members of the audience came specifically to hear them.
